Field Trip: Winter 2017 Module B Week 1

California Science Center

When? Thursday, February 2nd (this Thursday!)

• Remember, it’s quiz day! We’ll take all three quizzes during first period (9:00am-10:20am), so be on time!

What time? ~10:20am-1:30pm

• We will leave CWC after the quizzes. I will be leaving the California Science Center to come back to CWC at ~1:00pm (so we’d get back to school by ~1:30pm). You do not have to come back to school at that time, if you choose to, e.g. stay at the museum longer.

Where? 700 Exposition Park Dr. (by USC)

How much? Admission is FREE; Metro is $1.75 per ride ($1 for TAP card); UBER is ~ $2.50 if 4 people split a ride

• We will be taking the subway. If you choose to drive/carpool, that’s fine. Let me know you’re doing that, and meet us there.

Why? Our Reading chapter this week is “Science”

   • Make a list of 3 universities that you’d be interested in researching  and presenting. Just write down the names.

4. New Students
   • Read the syllabus & curriculum guide in detail.
   • Review the student handbook.
   • Get your textbooks! Textbooks are required for Vocabulary & Reading class, and you must have them by Monday morning 9am; otherwise you will be sent to talk to the CAO.

Thursday 1/26/17 – Module A Complete!

Hello! Today was the final day of module A. We completed our final quizzes today. Here’s the Google Doc with vocab. answers.

1. Vocab – Chapter 7 Reading (pg. 67-68), Exercise 1 (pg. 68) & Exercise 3 (pg. 70-71)
2. Reading – Prepare to discuss the reading questions. Think about the questions on pg. 85 (“Critical Thinking” Questions 1-3) & pg. 86 (“Bringing It All Together” Questions 1-3). TAKE NOTES on your responses (thoughts, opinions) to the questions, so you are ready to talk about it tomorrow in class.
3. L & N – Watch a TED Talk about protests. Choose one. Take notes. Use abbreviations for long words & repeated words. Be prepared to orally summarize the video to a partner tomorrow during class.

Announcement:

• Tomorrow, there is a university presentation (Westcliff University) at 1:45pm here at CWC. There will be pizza, too!
  • Extra Credit for attending: 1 day of vocab. HW (= 5 points)

Thursday 11/19/17

1. Vocabulary – Start studying Chapter 7 words (pg. 66).
2. Reading – Chapter 3 Reading 3 (pg. 78-79 “B. Reading Strategy”, pg. 80-81 active reading, pg. 82 “Comprehension A & B”)
3. Listening – Listen to Donald Trump’s inauguration speech.
   • It should be live streaming at 9am tomorrow. You should be able to find a link on Youtube. Even if you don’t watch it live, there will definitely be videos up you can watch anytime during the weekend.
     • Update: you can watch here, here and here, etc.
   • Analyze the speech. What rhetorical devices does he use?
     • Think about the rhetorical devices we discussed in class on Monday when analyzing MLK’s speech.
     • Think about the TED Talk I assigned for homework.
     • Compare Trump’s speech and speaking style to Obama’s.
   • We will discuss on Monday during 3rd period.
